Punu Window Shutter # 1 - Gabon
The female motif is decorated with an elaborate three-part coiffure, neck ring
and scarification. Punu masks with a similar face were worn by costumed stilt
dancers and said to represent the spirit of beautiful young women who returned
from the dead to participate in village life. The whitened figure makes
reference to anti-witchcraft techniques. Whiteness refers to clarity and light,
which stand in opposition to night and mystery.
