MASKS

Pende Mask - Congo
This mask appeared at the Mukanda coming-out rites. The
Mukanda, the initiation school for Pende males, educated and prepared young
men for their adult responsibilities, which included circumcision, the most
important prerequisite for adult status and virility. The beardlike appendage
of the mask is said to represent the authority of the ancestors.
