MASKS

Kumu Mask - Congo
The art of the Kumu, who inhabit the forested areas of central Africa, is
little known and insufficiently studied. The masks are considered embodiments
of the diviner's spirit and may be viewed only by initiates. They are worn at
ceremonies by a pair of male-female masqueraders clad in costumes of bark
cloth and reeds who sit on a bench and perform a dance consisting only of head
and arm movements.
