Ibibio Mask # 2 - Nigeria
These round flat masks have been attributed primarily to the Eket (southern Ibibio), but also to the neighboring Oron and Okobo where they are used by the exclusive Ekong association in impressive masked dance spectacles. The circular shape of the mask supposedly represents the full moon and the triangular motifs its rays, while the shape of the eyes would suggest a new moon.
10.5" diameter
