The Shona people comprise eighty percent of Zimbabwe’s population, hence the art form has been termed “Shona Sculpture” even though all the artists are not of Shona ancestry. The sculpture is by itself a contemporary phenomenon with the deeper currents of Shona culture. Themes of nature, metamorphosis, flora and fauna abound. The Shona base their religion on a communion between the natural world and the ancestral spirits who inhabit it.
